The Zen of MLM: Legacy, Leadership and the Network Marketing Experience

The prominent UK-based network marketing tools site “Knowledge Is King” has beknighted The Zen of MLM as its “book of the month” for November, citing one Adam May as declaring it “The best network marketing book I have ever read!” and Barry Phillips (KIK’s book purchaser) as dubbing it “A must read for anyone ast any level of the business!”

Well, color me tickled.

The phrase “viral marketing” has worked its way into our everyday vocabulary, sometimes losing its true meaning in the process (as tends to happen sometimes when words settle into everyday vocabulary). Seth Godin makes an excellent distinction: “viral marketing” is not only not the same thing as “word of mouth,” but in a critical way, it’s quite the opposite: while typical word of mouth is a decaying signal, true viral marketing is a compounding (i.e., self-amplifying) one.

Network marketers, take note: in that distinction lies the success or failure of your business.

I just saw a note by a friend, Linda Dewing, who quotes a friend of hers:

“The first fifteen years of my career were spent in the for-profit world, where the bottom line is about making money. The past ten years have been devoted to the non-profit world, where the bottom line is about helping others.”

“That got me thinking,” comments Linda. “Distinguishing between work that makes money and work that helps others is a common way of differentiating how we work. The amazing thing about being in network marketing is that we don’t have to make that division. We are making money and helping people—and we’re helping other people make money and help people, too!”

What a great description of this profession. You get to eat your cake and serve it, too.

I’ve had more response from “Lessons from My Mom on Staying Young Forever” than just about any other post I’ve written. I so wish she were here to see all these books being published, one after the other. She would doubtless have a caustic and hilarious comment; and she, ever the devoted writer, would be so thrilled.

The best I can do is offer this additional piece in her honor.

When The Go-Giver comes out, you’ll notice that the dedication page says, “To Mike and Myrna Burg and Alfred and Carolyn Mann, who gave us everything.” Indeed they did.
